Building a Brighter Future for Antioch Schools

Olga Cobos Smith, Candidate for Antioch School Board, Area 4
I believe in the capacity of the children of Antioch to learn and the ability of our teachers to educate them.

Right now, only two out every ten 3rd graders are reading at grade level. I would work hard to bring reading programs to Antioch schools with proven success in other schools in the U.S.

Harassment and bullying have been ongoing issues in Antioch schools. I would work hard to make our schools more inclusive. Our students, teachers and support staff deserve a stress-free environment to learn, work and play in.

Over the years, Antioch schools have made significant cuts to libraries, art programs and other programs. These things are vital to our children’s growth and development. I would word hard to bring them back.

Antioch Schools are beginning the repairs approved by the voters in the last election. I will watch the budget closely and work hard to make sure project labor agreements are used with our local labor unions to get the work done.
My grandfather emigrated from Mexico to the U.S. as a 12-year-old fieldworker to later own his own farm. My mom was the first of her siblings to earn a bachelor’s degree. Taking my cues from her, I earned my master’s degree in health policy. Recently, my daughter earned her doctorate degree.
My family’s legacy has instilled in me a deep sense of dedication and hard work. This is what has made me a staunch advocate for our schools. Our children, teachers, and support staff deserve better, and I am committed to making that a reality.
I have interacted with Antioch Schools in several different capacities. I served as a school site council (SSC) representative for Sutter Elementary, I was also elected to the English Learners Advisory Council (ELAC) and served as Vice President during my second year on the committee. When my granddaughter transitioned to Park Middle School, I transitioned with her continuing to serve on SSC and ELAC at Park. As a member of the School District’s Equity and Excellence Committee, I worked with elected representatives, school staff, and community members to launch the first Equity Audit to ensure we’re building more inclusive schools that meet our demands today.

My grandparents with Cesar Chavez. They marched together to Sacramento.

My mother, a retired civil servant who spent most of her professional life as a Budget Analyst for the United States Air Force.

Me and my daughter in the early years. Long before any college, I was a certified nursing assistant. Now, I am part of the 8% of Latinas that have achieved a masters degree.
